From the Artist:

"When I first came up with the theme and design for Skagway Pride Celebration 2026 I was seeing so much in the news about our community being targeted from so many directions. So many battles over public policy, healthcare and basic civil rights. I just started thinking about how we as a group are not seen, or chosen to be neglected. The amount of brutal setbacks we’ve seen is just staggering to say the least.

So the idea popped into my head of Lady Liberty wearing a blindfold, in part inspired by the album cover for Metallica’s ‘And Justice for All’. I went through so many design ideas. Do I make it full body holding the torch? A side profile design? Do I try to make it more political than just the message I was trying to convey? And ultimately, how do I make this formline? Once I settled on the concept, the design just started building itself, using elements from a past pride design and focusing on traditional design concepts from formline itself. Next was how do I color this? Most Northwest Coast Formline follows the same colors throughout traditionally, but I wanted this to be instantly recognizable from a distance or up close. I ended up pulling colors directly from an image of the Statue of Liberty, hoping this would help me accomplish my task. Lastly was what the blindfold would be, ultimately settling on a rainbow gradient to tie in pride and the message of this year’s theme.

As an inclusive community, to those who are LGBTQ+ and all those we welcome with open arms as friends and allies, I felt this design would still resonate. We need justice and equality for all people, races, religions and demographics. I hope when you view this design these thoughts are in the forefront as we all move forward, hopefully to a better and brighter future for all. "
